Spotlight on…is an initiative of WICI (Women in Credit Insurance) aiming at highlighting females working in the Trade Credit Insurance business. Every month, a new interview article will be published on ICISA website.
This month our spotlight is on Leigh Carnie, Head of Renewals – South at Tokio Marine HCC. Leigh has been working in the credit insurance industry for over 20 years, initially working for a broker before moving to Tokio Marine HCC in 2004. Leigh is on the Women In Credit Insurance Leadership Team and the Trade Credit Committee for the Association of British Insurers.
What are your 3 top tips for a successful career in the trade credit industry?
- Be nice and respectful to everyone you interact with. Falling out with people really doesn’t help!
- Never think you know it all and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Not only does this help your learning and shows you are interested, but it gives others the confidence to ask their own questions
- Deal with issues as soon as they come up. Things are invariably not as bad as you think they are. Challenge them face on and they won’t play on your mind
What is the most important lesson you’ve learnt during your career?
Be my true self. Trust in my abilities and not compare myself to others
What is the best advice you would give to an aspiring leader?
Be brave (especially when you don’t feel it). Believe in yourself. Be honest with yourself and others. Listen, collaborate and have empathy.
What is one frequent mistake you witness leaders making?
Trying to do everything themselves. We all need to ask for help and support and recognise when someone else can help us achieve a better result.
What helps you to unwind/distress?
I love to have a giggle and not take life too seriously, being outdoors, going for long walks, skiing (badly) and enjoying good food and company.
