Spotlight on…is an initiative of WICI (Women in Credit Insurance) aiming at highlighting females and male allies working in the Trade Credit Insurance business. Every month, a new interview article will be published on ICISA website.
As the Group Managing Director of NCI (largest broker in Australia), new shareholder of Efcis, and supporter or WICI UK, we thought we would get to know Kirk Cheesman a little better as the UK market is now his second home.
What is the most important lesson you’ve learnt during your career?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is that change is very beneficial. Both personal and business renewal are crucial. However, that does not mean moving jobs every two years (I’ve been with NCI 35 years). In my early career I believed that consistency and stability were the key traits for success. Over time, I have realised that evolving, moving with change and succession within a business are essential to continuously re-energise and maintain successful growth.
What do you do to ensure that you continue to grow and develop as a leader?
Keep looking outside your own circles. You can learn so much about leadership and business improvements by going outside your own industry. I am a big fan of learning from other businesses experiences, whether that be other companies, sporting teams or clients and suppliers. Reading case studies and books to see what is done well (or not so well) can enhance your own leadership skills.
What is your favourite part of your job?
Building partnerships. Working with staff, clients, Insurers and other partners is the fun part of life and work. Creating a great culture and having fun together builds long term relationships and friendships. Having strong partnerships develops exciting opportunities together or working through problems when needed.
How did you get to where you are today?
Working hard and being a “sponge” (learning all the time). Saying “yes” when extra work needs to be done or at an opportunity when it comes your way. Setting goals every year and have them visible every day and review them every quarter. Being accountable, honest and trustworthy are values clients, staff, partners, shareholders and family rely on.
