History
The Tokyo Fire Insurance Co. Ltd., forerunner of The Yasuda Fire & Marine Insurance Co. Ltd., was founded in 1888 as the first fire insurance company in Japan. Sompo Japan began the operations on 1 July 2002 after the merger of two companies, The Yasuda Fire & Marine Insurance Co. Ltd. and The Nissan Fire & Marine Insurance Co. Ltd. Then the company merged with Taisei Fire and Marine Insurance Co. Ltd. on 1 December 2002. Sompo Japan and Nipponkoa Insurance Co., Ltd. established a joint holding company, NKSJ Holdings, Inc. in April 2010, and changed the name to Sompo Holdings, Inc. in 2020. As regards to credit and guarantee insurance, the company started to write fidelity insurance in 1930, credit insurance in 1950, guarantee business in 1951 and bonds in 1966.
