On May 1, 1859, the « Mutual Insurance Company against accidents at work and bodily injuries occurring as a result of the exécution of the work » was born under the French Second Empire at the time of the Haussmannian works.

1859 The Trade Union of Masonry Contractors of Paris and the Seine creates the Mutual Insurance Company against accidents at work and bodily injuries occurring as a result of the execution of the work

1899 The Mutual Insurance Company changes its name and becomes the Société Mutuelle d’Assurance des Chambres Syndicales du Bâtiment et des Travaux Publics (SMABTP) to focus on third-party risk insurance for masonry companies

1933 Creation of the Société Mutuelle d’Assurance du Bâtiment et des Travaux Publics, as Life Insurance

1940 – 1990 the build-up of an ambitious project

1949 Creation of the National Retirement Fund for Building and Public Work Contractors

1973 The Mutual Insurance Company becomes SMABTP

1989 Acquisition of ASEFA, a Spanish insurance company created in 1972 by a group of entrepreneurs, a major player in the surety sector in Spain

1991 – today : the power of a mutualist spirit

1994 Creation of the EXCELLENCE SMA Foundation

1998 Creation of a subsidiary for the management of the Group’s assets, called SMA Gestion

         2007 SGAM btp, a group company for mutual insurance in the building and public works sector, is created by SMABTP

         2011 Acquisition of Imperio assurance, a French subsidiary specializing in personal insurance, and Victoria International, a Portuguese insurer

         2017 Opening of a subsidiary un Belgium and Ivory Coast

         2022 The group launches a transport and maritime insurance activity with the creation of SMA Transport

         2023 Acquisition of DUPI and Woningborg, leader in surety in the Netherlands

2024 GALIAN-SMABTP bringing together the activities dedicated to real estate professionals and those of GALIAN and absorption of CGI BÂTIMENT, specialized in bonds and financial guarantees for individual house builders, real estate developers and land developers.
