Export Development Canada (EDC) is a Crown corporation wholly owned by the Government of Canada. Established in 1944, EDC’s mission is to support and develop trade between Canada and other countries, helping Canadian businesses compete and succeed in the global marketplace.

EDC provides a wide range of services designed to meet the needs of Canadian exporters. These services include trade credit insurance, export financing, bonding products, and equity investments. By offering these tools, EDC helps businesses mitigate risks, secure financing, and access new markets.

In addition to financial products, EDC offers valuable market expertise and insights, enabling Canadian companies to make informed decisions and capitalize on international opportunities. With a mandate to enhance Canada’s export capacity and respond to international business opportunities, EDC plays a crucial role in driving economic growth and fostering global trade relationships.

Company History

1944: EDC was established as the Export Credits Insurance Corporation (ECIC) under the Export Credits Insurance Act. Its primary goal was to help stimulate the Canadian economy post-World War II by supporting Canadian exporters.

1969: The Export Development Act was proclaimed on October 1, 1969, which led to the creation of the Export Development Corporation (EDC) as the successor to ECIC.

2001: EDC changed its name from Export Development Corporation to Export Development Canada to better reflect its role and mandate.

2018: EDC established FinDev Canada, a governmental development bank aimed at supporting sustainable development in developing countries.
