Spotlight on…is an initiative of WICI (Women in Credit Insurance) aiming at highlighting females and male allies working in the Trade Credit Insurance business. Every month, a new interview article will be published on ICISA website.
This month in the spotlight is Antonia Morgan, Trade Credit Practice Leader of Glasgow at Marsh.
- What challenges have you faced as a woman in this sector, how have you overcome them?
In the past I have found my ideas to be initially ignored but then repeated by a man and then they are considered. Sometimes this can happen in a way that the man is championing for you, other times they are happy taking credit for your idea. I used to sit silent and be frustrated but now I will make it known that it was actually my idea!
- What leadership qualities do you believe are most critical for success in this industry today?
Listening, Compassion and Open-mindedness would be my top three. But I think it’s important that you lean into your natural qualities as these define your style. It’s useful to also have an awareness of the skills which you may lack and try to develop those too.
- What advice would you give to young women/people aspiring to leadership roles in trade credit insurance?
Challenge yourself and back yourself. If you lack the confidence, then reach out to allies and managers for their support. But nothing comes easy so be prepared to pull up your socks and graft!
- How do you maintain resilience and work-life balance in a demanding leadership role?
I don’t think I have got this part perfect yet. But I use sport as an outlet to keep me balanced and I am lucky that my husband also enjoys staying active and the outdoors too. Of course, moving to Scotland meant we are surrounded by beautiful walks and places to explore. I am grateful to Marsh for supporting me with the leadership role and a move up here.
- What is the favourite part of your job?
I love meeting new people and businesses which is why the move from Insurer to Broker suited me well. I thrive off the challenge of finding solutions and adapting to changes in the market or my client’s needs which create new opportunities. I also must mention my team as I have great people and personalities around me which keep things…interesting!
